E.max Veneers in Orange County: Cost and Strength

E.max veneers are veneers made from lithium disilicate, a pressed or milled glass-ceramic sold by Ivoclar as IPS e.max. The material is rated at 400 MPa in its pressed form and 530 MPa milled, and a 2025 meta-analysis put lithium disilicate veneer survival at 96.81 percent after 10.4 years.

What e.max actually is

E.max, often typed emax, is not a separate kind of dentistry. It is a brand name. IPS e.max is Ivoclar's line of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, and a lithium disilicate veneer is a porcelain veneer. So when a patient in Orange County asks whether they should get porcelain veneers or e.max veneers, the honest answer is that e.max is one of the porcelain options on the table, alongside hand-layered feldspathic porcelain and, in rarer cases, zirconia. The reason the brand name travels so far is that lithium disilicate solved a real problem. Traditional feldspathic porcelain is beautiful and can be layered by hand into something nearly indistinguishable from natural enamel, but it is comparatively fragile. Lithium disilicate keeps most of the optical quality and adds a large amount of strength.

e.max Press and e.max CAD are not the same

Two versions exist, and they are made differently:

  • IPS e.max Press: pressed from an ingot in a dental laboratory. Ivoclar rates it at 400 MPa flexural strength. It is the version chosen when a case needs hand layering and heavy individual characterization, which is most of the time in front-tooth cosmetic work.
  • IPS e.max CAD: milled from a block, then crystallized in a furnace. Ivoclar rates it at 530 MPa biaxial flexural strength after crystallization, and it can be crystallized in about 11 minutes, which is what makes single-visit chairside restorations possible.

Both are lithium disilicate. The higher number on the CAD block does not automatically make it the better cosmetic choice, because a front-tooth veneer almost never fails on raw strength. It fails on fit, bonding, bite management, or shade. Ivoclar offers e.max CAD in four translucency levels plus an Impulse version made specifically for veneers, which is a reminder that in this category the optical decision matters more than the megapascal count.

How long e.max veneers last, by the data

This is where lithium disilicate has an unusually strong evidence base for a cosmetic material.

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry in March 2025 pooled 29 clinical studies on ceramic laminate veneers. At 10.4 years it found a survival rate of 96.81 percent for lithium disilicate, 96.13 percent for feldspathic, and 93.70 percent for leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic. Survival was statistically similar across materials.

The gap showed up in complications rather than outright failure. At 10.4 years, lithium disilicate recorded 6.1 percent technical, 1.9 percent esthetic, and 0.45 percent biological complications. Feldspathic recorded 41.48 percent technical, 19.64 percent esthetic, and 6.51 percent biological. The authors concluded that lithium disilicate may be preferred where long-term success is the priority.

Ivoclar's own scientific reporting is consistent with that, citing an average survival rate of 95.2 percent for e.max CAD over periods of up to 15 years.

Two things are worth saying plainly. First, those numbers come from studies where the veneers were placed by experienced clinicians on well-selected cases, so they describe what the material can do, not what any veneer will do. How thin can they go

Ivoclar lists a minimum thickness of 0.4 mm for e.max CAD veneers. That is thin enough that many cases need only a light enamel reduction rather than an aggressive prep, which is the whole point of the minimal prep and no-prep approach. It is not a promise of no preparation. Whether your case can stay that conservative depends on how your existing teeth are positioned, how much you want the shape to change, and how your bite loads the front teeth.

e.max compared with the alternatives

  • Versus feldspathic porcelain: feldspathic still wins on pure translucency and remains the artist's choice for the most lifelike single front teeth. E.max trades a little of that for a large drop in technical complications over a decade.
  • Versus composite: composite resin is cheaper and can be done in one visit, but it is softer, stains over time, and needs replacing far sooner. See composite veneers.

What e.max veneers cost in Orange County

Who lithium disilicate suits best

  • Patients who want a full porcelain veneer smile rather than one or two teeth, where consistency across the arch matters more than maximum translucency on a single tooth.
  • Patients with a heavier bite or a history of clenching, provided the grinding is managed. Read veneers when you grind your teeth first.
  • Patients who want the longest track record of low complication rates over ten years or more.

Frequently asked questions

Are e.max veneers the same as porcelain veneers?

Yes. E.max is a brand of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic made by Ivoclar, and lithium disilicate is a dental porcelain. Every e.max veneer is a porcelain veneer, though not every porcelain veneer is e.max.

Do e.max veneers stain?

The glazed ceramic surface itself does not absorb stain the way natural enamel does, so coffee, tea, and red wine do not discolor the veneer. What can discolor over the years is the resin cement at the margin and the natural tooth structure around it, which is one reason margin placement and cement choice matter.

Are e.max veneers stronger than feldspathic?

Substantially, yes. Ivoclar rates e.max Press at 400 MPa and e.max CAD at 530 MPa, both far above traditional feldspathic porcelain, and the 2025 meta-analysis found much lower long-term technical complication rates for lithium disilicate. Feldspathic still holds an edge in translucency.

Can e.max veneers be removed later?

Not in the sense of going back to your original teeth. Any veneer that required enamel reduction is a permanent commitment, because the removed enamel does not grow back. A veneer can be replaced, but the tooth will always need something covering it.

How many e.max veneers do most people get?

Eight to ten on the upper arch is the most common choice, because that is roughly what shows in a full smile. Patients with a wide smile line, or who want the lower arch matched, go to twelve or to a top and bottom combination.
