Veneer Fell Off? Here Is Exactly What to Do
If a veneer falls off, keep it safe, avoid glue, and call your dentist within a day or two. Dr. Ryan Savage, DDS of Orange County explains repairs and rebonding.
If a veneer falls off, stay calm: keep the veneer in a small container, do not glue it back yourself, avoid chewing on that side, and call your dentist within a day or two. Most detached veneers can be professionally rebonded if they are intact and you act quickly.
Do this immediately
- Find and save the veneer in a clean container; do not wrap it in tissue that gets thrown away
- Rinse your mouth gently and check the tooth in a mirror
- Cover any sharp edge with dental wax from a pharmacy if needed
- Call your dentist and describe whether the veneer is whole or cracked
Never do this
- Do not use super glue or household adhesive; it ruins the veneer and can damage the tooth
- Do not chew hard food on the exposed tooth
- Do not ignore it; exposed prepared enamel can become sensitive and stain
Why veneers come off
Debonding is uncommon with quality work. The usual culprits: aging adhesive after many years, night grinding without a guard, biting something very hard, or marginal bonding technique from the original provider. If your veneer is older, this is often the natural end of its 15 to 20 year lifespan and a chance to upgrade the smile.
Rebond or replace?
An intact, well-fitting veneer can usually be cleaned and rebonded in one visit. A cracked or chipped veneer is remade. Either way the tooth underneath is evaluated first. We repair veneers placed elsewhere all the time; see our porcelain veneers page for how we approach quality.
FAQ
Is a fallen-off veneer an emergency?
It is urgent but rarely an emergency. Within 48 hours is ideal.
Does rebonding hurt?
No. The surfaces are cleaned and the veneer is reattached, usually without anesthetic.
Will insurance or a warranty cover it?
Ask your original provider about their warranty; we will advise honestly on repair vs replacement.
